M&R Unlisted: Queen Liliuokalani Hawaii Royalty Flag Ingot

First identified in one of my March 2013 blog entries. http://wp.me/p3eNTe-6e

Below is a Mint On Card (MOC) of the version of the Queen Liliuokalani Hawaii Royalty Flag ingot. As a collector of collectibles, MOC items always command a premium over items exposed to human hands and the environmental elements.

I purchased this ingot assuming the packaging was damaged and the ingot had a few spots based on provided images. To my surprise, it was just dirt and grime an the packaging. I carefully wiped the packaging clean and it truly is a MOC with a pristine specimen fully enclosed.

Possible Test Strike – 1998 King Kamehameha Akahi Dala

One of my recent top finds was a sealed 1996 Royal Hawaiian Silver Proof Set with wrong coins (each coin was not dated 1996). The set’s serial number is 0754. COA, holder, and box indicates it should be a 1996 Royal Hawaiian Silver Proof Set. The 1998 King Kamehameha Akahi Dala was part of this error set.

The 1998 King Kamehameha Akahi Dala maybe a test strike. The paring of the 1998 King Kamehameha Sovereign obverse die with an Akhahi Dala reverse die striking may have possibly created a new variety with with very few specimens.  This variety has never been reported to best of my knowledge. However, I am the first to document this  find and make it publicly available to the numismatic community.

1980 Kamehameha the Great – Issued by Precious Metals Hawaii

This is a Precious Metals Hawaii (PMH) issued 1/2 ounce sterling silver (0.925 fineness) coin. The PMH hallmark is on the reverse bottom.

I will have to send this to NCS to get conserved to remove the clouding and finger prints on the obverse. Even though this coin is not listed in Medcalf & Russell, I have seen a gold 1 ounce version encapsulated and graded by NGC.

Due to the rise in silver prices in the 1980’s, it is generally believed that most of these silver (and gold) coins were melted.

The PMH hallmark is Precious Metals Hawaii and not Pacific Medals Hawaii. I have the original presentation case and box for this coin. The coin was issued without encapsulation.

The gold 1 ounce version of this coin was identified in one of my March 2013 blog entries.

New Princess Kaiulani Silver 1/10 ounce Die Discovery

Identified a new die variety on the 1992 dated Princess Kaiulani 1/10 oz silver.

New initials located on the bottom left of her neck. Initials seems to be an “W” laying over the letter “b” with the lower part of the “W” sharing the middle part  of the letter “b”.

The 1992 dated design is bold and the Princess has more dept. Her cheeks are rounder.

As you can see from the top two coins,  die deterioration has occurred (RHM on bottom, “APPARENT”, and “1891”).

When comparing the top coin with the middle, you can see that the same reverse die was used with the middle coin having more detail deterioration.

As for the new die, this is the first time I have held and studied the coin. Coin detail is beautiful and frosted on the design elements.

Additional platinum and gold 1/10 Kaiulani coins. On the gold 1/10 oz, notice the die deterioration in “E” of APPARENT, “8” of 1891, and RHM under HAWAII

2MS-13 (aka HK-535) Aluminum Alaska-Hawaii Statehood Medal

Just purchased a HK-535 Alaska-Hawaii Statehood medal sight unseen in uncirculated condition.

I made previous purchases from this dealer and was satisfied with each purchase. This is an old school dealer which sells by listing and provides no images.

At least the dealer uses email to reserve the coins, but still requires payment by certified check. Picture will be provided as soon as its delivered.

Here is an online listing of the medal series:
